HI Beth, thanks for your comment. I can weigh in here. I'm sorry your son is going through this now, and I'm happy he's seeing a therapist/counselor. As for nutrients, yes, it's worth testing a comprehensive nutrient panel to see if he has any deficiencies, including omega 3 fatty acids. If he has deficiencies, it will be important to replace them with food (if possible) and supplements (often necessary as well). Omega 3 fatty acids, in particular, are helpful with mood and reducing anxiety, so it might be helpful if his are low to replace them. If he's not eating flax/chia seeds or a small amount of fish or supplementing, chances are, he will be low. If he is low, a low dose supplement, such as EPA/DHA 500-1000mg combined might be helpful. He can work with someone like Dr. Marbas or myself, or a local doctor who does more lifestyle/integrative/functional medicine work. Some primary physicians also will test nutrient panels, so you can ask your local doctors as well. Hope that helps. Take care.
You talked about Omega 3s and I wondered if my son should begin taking these for his health, if he will. He’s 29 so I can only suggest and most times he doesn’t listen but if I am certain sometimes he will at least look into it. His health is complicated by his eating habits and stress/anxiety - he graduated with a PHD in pharmacy and because of his level of anxiety he has failed his Boards 4 times now. He had a tutor this last time and he had tested him in everything he felt he needed to know, and he told him you know it, just keep reviewing up to the day of his test. He still failed. Hewas devastated again. He asked us if he could see a therapist / counselor before he signed up again. He has seen(virtually) on 2x/week now for 3 weeks and doesn’t see it benefiting yet he wants to continue so I am hoping then, that he is actually moving incrementally to a healthier state. He came home for Thanksgiving and says he lives on protein shakes because he feels nauseous with making a chicken sandwich or any other kinds of foods he use to eat before. He didn’t join the family for thanksgiving dinner or any actually, but would hang back with his young nieces and nephews after they had dinner and we all were still eating. I am very concerned on any nutrients or lack there without any real food, to be able to get better without this changing in some way?!! Where or who needs to evaluate him?! Right now we financially still support him, but hope that he will be able to be on his own. Thanks for any info. Appreciate this platform to think and talk thru this!
